About the Artist

Teri takes her jewellery inspiration from her love of fashion, textiles, pattern and geometric forms. Her mothers profession as a dressmaker means that her childhood environment was intensely creative, surrounded by rich patterned fabrics and threads, where she learnt to knit, sew and embroider. Also encouraged to draw from an early age, she explored line-drawing with an intense enthusiasm, eventually leading to a long and highly successful career in Graphic Design based in London. Coming to jewellery design through adult education, Teri's jewellery ranges span two different media - her 'couture' ranges featuring hand-knitting and crochet in intricate silver and gold wire - with her 'off-the-peg' work featuring graphic, illustrative designs in a stencil style made from sheet silver. Teri has come to see her crochet pieces literally, as 'drawings in the air' - the pencil line replaced with precious metal wire. She works with simple crochet stitches, repeated rhythmically in soft, fluid silver or gold, with discipline and patience pure sculptural forms emerge. She finds in this 'low-tech' production method, a gentle, quiet rebellion against todays world of 'instant everything'. Exploring the idea of 'surface' - her sheet silver work is deliberately 2-dimensional, as is a tattoo, a stencil or a piece of fabric. The lines are pared down to their minimalist core - the sterling silver is credit-card thin and edgy. Inspiration is drawn from diverse sources which include japanese kimono motifs, tibetan mandalas, fractals and symmetries which occur in nature.
