Artist's Statement
Having graduated from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, I furthered my studies in jewellery at the Royal College of Art specialising in the technique of electroforming.
Electroforming is an industrial plating technique that I use to create sinuous, organic and integrated forms, suggesting movement through the use of continuous line. My jewellery often challenges preconceived ideas regarding scale; items of jewellery can be created that are so light that the expected length or width can be exceeded without encumbering the wearer.
Seedpods, fruit and other structural forms found in nature are sources of inspiration as are the man made objects and artforms of other cultures. The drawings and prints of Ernst Haeckel bring into focus the beauty of highly complex structures such as microscopic organisms whilst African tribal masks with their highly stylised features appear deceptively simple. It is this contrast between the complex and the simple which interest me.
The fluid and sinuous forms of my jewellery are further enhanced by the strategic placing of coloured lacquer within recesses of the electroformed surface.
