About Charlotte Smith
Charlotte Smith is a jeweller who combines traditional craft techniques with contemporary design. Working from a former nail maker’s cottage in the Black Country, she feels a strong connection to history and craft which helps to shape her work. Her journey into jewellery-making began in her teens, later leading her to study Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University followed later by an MA at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham. A gift of a kiln and enamelling books sparked her love for enamel, shaping her signature style—delicate, hand-enamelled ‘sequins’ sewn into intricate jewellery pieces.
The inspiration for Charlotte’s jewellery was initially sparked by the sequins on her daughter’s T-shirt, which caught her eye in an otherwise mundane moment when doing laundry. In replicating the tiny moving parts in silver and enamel, Charlotte has created a collection which is feminine, tactile and reminiscent of the heavily petalled dahlias in her garden.
Alongside her jewellery practice, she teaches part-time, having previously spent 14 years as a Design and Technology teacher. She has received industry recognition, including two silver awards at the 2023 Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Awards and the Phil Barnes bursary for enamelling.
