About Kelda Young
Kelda’s work is centred around material connection and the physical act of making. The shapes used are abstracted forms and elements that have been translated from her own memories, photographs and moments to create compositions. As Kelda’s work has developed over the years the patterns have become more simplified and abstract and she now focuses on composition and creating balance within each piece. Generally drawn to bold striking shapes found in architecture and intricate organic details found in nature, these opposing elements are combined to carefully create harmonious works.
Each piece goes through several carefully considered stages to decorate and elevate the material - fulling leaning into the process and playing around in the workshop.
A high-pressure embossing technique is used in an unusual way creating surface patterns and textures that appear soft and enticing. Kelda hollow forms a lot of her work to maintain the striking scale of the finished piece whilst allowing the jewellery or objects to still be wearable. This also encourages people’s curiosity and to engage with the pieces – there is an element of surprise as scale usually coincides with weight.
Kelda finds endless possibilities within making, often already thinking about the next design whilst in the early stages of the current one. She strives to create pieces that are individual and believes that’s where the beauty in hand fabrication lies - no two pieces will every really be the same.
