RACHEL BROWN

My name is Rachel Brown and I am a Yorkshire based jeweller specialising in contemporary enamel and graphite drawn jewellery. I use mainly silver and copper with the addition of gold or brass as colour highlights.

Artist's Statement

I fell in love with this lesser known enamelling technique when I was researching different ways to enamel. I have always sketched and doodled and always with a pencil, this technique was the perfect way to combine my love of drawing/mark making and jewellery making. I only use white enamel which represents the clean white pages of a sketchbook and I hand draw my patterns and marks using a graphite pencil. My recent work explores the use of graphite powder which produces the most wonderful abstract and painterly marks on the surface of the enamel. Each piece of jewellery is unique due to the hand drawn nature of the work and the firing process which can result in perfect white enamel or if overfired, hints of blues and greens.

I am inspired by anything and everything, from leaves on a tree to the patterns created in a pair of laddered tights!
