Kirsty Sumerling is an Edinburgh based jeweller, working with enamel, precious metal, pottery pieces and found objects. She emulates the worn, weathered condition of dilapidated buildings and structures, favouring a muted colour palette.
Artist's Statement
A recent graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, Kirsty Sumerling’s jewellery is inspired by the fragmentation of things, especially places and objects that have fallen into a state of disrepair. Constantly gathering and collecting discarded objects that have no further use and working directly from personal drawings and photography, she emulates the worn, weathered condition of dilapidated buildings and structures. Favouring a muted colour palette in a distressed finish maintains this sense of neglect.
By exploring this condition in enamel and displaying fragments of pottery or porcelain, these components are plucked from a state of neglect and disuse and are displayed in a new context where they have purpose. She is primarily interested in the construction of a piece, the layering of linear forms and the repetition of common elements. Moveable components in her work allow the wearer to experience the tactile process of construction.
